DESCRIPTION
6th Grade English and spelling is required for all sixth grade students and is
part of the sixth grade core curriculum block. The class meets three days per
week for 68 minutes per session. Emphasis in this course is on the development
of writing. Units studied include parts of speech, story writing, and poetry.
Grammar and usage will be enhanced in journals, essays and every day dialect.
Students will also take weekly spelling tests that will help increase their
vocabulary.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. Students will identify types of sentences, subjects and predicates. (8.2.1)
2. Students will compose writings that integrate the parts of speech including
nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, conjunctions, and prepositions.

3. Students will write paragraphs using correct paragraph form. (8.2.2)
4. Students will demonstrate the rules of capitalization and punctuation.

5. Students will express the correct rules of usage. (8.2.1)
6. Students will inhance their editing skills. (8.2.3)
7. Students will execute the steps necessary in writing process. (8.2.3)

WRITING ACTIVITIES
1. Students will write in a journal on a regular basis.

6. Students will write multiple paragraphs that have a clearly stated main topic
with at least three supporting sentences.
