Description

This course helps students to develop and refine formal speaking skills. Instruction and in-class work includes persuasive, informative, oral interpretation, and impromptu speaking. Emphasis is placed on discovering what communication is and its elements.

Course Objectives

1. Students will understand the importance and variety of speech communications in the modern world.
2. Students will develop an awareness of themselves, now and in the future, by performing a wide range of public and private speech communications situations.
3. Students will understand the stages involved in the major speech communication processes.
4. Students will become critical speakers and listeners.
5. Students will develop introductory-level mastery of the major modes of speech communication.

Writing Activities

1. Students are required to write out their speeches in outline format.
2. A 4-5 page book report is due during the semester.
3. Homework questions and chapter reviews are assigned throughout the semester.

Multicultural Activities

1. Students study famous speeches written and delivered by all races.
2. Students choose topics of speeches that deal with all races.
