DESCRIPTION
This course seeks to enable the students to engage in functional conversation in
the target language. It is bilingual, but more Spanish is used than English. The
course reviews all previous grammar in Spanish, utilizes contemporary films in
Spanish, and classical literature in Spanish to develop the skills of listening,
thinking, hypothesizing, and writing in Spanish.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The following goals of the Nebraska Foreign Language Frameworks document are the
basis of our course objectives.
1. Students will learn to communicate in Spanish.
Standard 1.1 Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information,
express feelings and emotions and exchange opinions.
Standard 1.2 Students understand and interpret written and spoken Spanish on a
variety of topics.
Standard 1.3 Students convey information, concepts and ideas to listeners and
readers in Spanish.
2. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures.
Standard 2.1 Students will demonstrate an understanding of the relationship
between the practices of their culture and those of some Hispanic cultures.
Standard 2.2 Students demonstrate an understanding of the perspective of the
cultures studied.
3. Students will connect with other disciplines and acquire information.
Standard 3.1 Students reinforce and further knowledge of other disciplines
through foreign languages.
Standard 3.2 Students acquire information and perspectives through authentic
materials in Spanish.
4. Students will develop insight into the nature of language and culture.
Standard 4.1 Students recognize that different languages use different pattern
to communicate and can apply this knowledge to their own language.
Standard 4.2 Students recognize that cultures use different patterns of
interaction and can apply this knowledge to their own culture.
In order to facilitate student acomplishment of these goals, students at the
Spanish 4 level will demonstrate a minimum of an intermediate-high proficiency
with the following linguistic and communication skills:
Linguistic concepts covered:
1. The subjunctive as a request or wish
2. The subjunctive mood vs. the indicative mood
3. The irregular subjunctive forms
4. The subjunctive to express emotion
5. The subjunctive after impersonal expression
6. The subjunctive of stem-changing verbs
7. The subjunctive to express doubt and uncertainty
8. The perfect subjunctive
9. The subjunctive or indicative after the relative pronoun
10. The subjunctive after para que and other conjunctions
11. The subjunctive or indicative after cuando
12. The imperfect subjunctive (regular and irregular)
13. The imperfect subjunctive in si clauses
14. The subjunctive with noun clauses
15. The subjunctive with relative clauses

WRITING ACTIVITIES
In the target language:

MULTICULTURE ACTIVITIES
1. The student will make an intensive study of: Hispanic American culture
through use of a text in Spanish which deals with this topic specifically.
2. Study in Spanish of 20th century history of Argentina.
3. Study with cultural sensitivity to the problems and motivations of immigrants
to the US, both legal and illegal, as well as their impact on the economy of the
US.
4. Study of the culture of Spain both past and present through its literature.
5. Study of native arts in Central America
