DESCRIPTION

This third-year course depends and builds upon the skills developed in the first two years. This year moves from the restraints of only the indicative mood to that of the imperative and the subjunctive moods as well. It is bilingual and speaking is emphasized as well as beginning-level essay writing skills. The course contains studies of current events, history, literature and economics as they impact the Hispanic society and language.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The following goals of the Nebraska Foreign Language Frameworks document are the basis of our course objectives.

1. Students will learn to communicate in Spanish.

Standard 1.1 Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions and exchange opinions.

Standard 1.2 Students understand and interpret written and spoken Spanish on a variety of topics.

Standard 1.3 Students convey information, concepts and ideas to listeners and readers in Spanish.

2. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures.

Standard 2.1 Students will demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices of their culture and those of some Hispanic cultures.

Standard 2.2 Students demonstrate an understanding of the perspective of the cultures studied.

3. Students will connect with other disciplines and acquire information.

Standard 3.1 Students reinforce and further knowledge of other disciplines through foreign languages.

Standard 3.2 Students acquire information and perspectives through authentic materials in Spanish.

4. Students will develop insight into the nature of language and culture.

Standard 4.1 Students recognize that different languages use different pattern to communicate and can apply this knowledge to their own language.

Standard 4.2 Students recognize that cultures use different patterns of interaction and can apply this knowledge to their own culture.

In order to facilitate student acomplishment of these goals, students at the Spanish 3 level will demonstrate intermediate-mid proficiency with the following linguistic and communication skills

Linguistic concepts covered:

The student will demonstrate intermediate level proficiency with all
Spanish I and Spanish II objectives and novice level of proficiency with:
1. The subjunctive as a request or wish
2. The subjunctive mood vs. the indicative mood
3. The irregular subjunctive forms
4. The subjunctive to express emotion
5. The subjunctive after impersonal expression
6. The subjunctive of stem-changing verbs
7. The subjunctive to express doubt and uncertainty
8. The perfect subjunctive
9. The subjunctive or indicative after the relative pronoun
10. The subjunctive after para que and other conjunctions
11. The subjunctive or indicative after cuando
12. The imperfect subjunctive (regular and irregular)
13. The imperfect subjunctive in si clauses
14. The subjunctive with noun clauses
15. The subjunctive with relative clauses

Communication goals:

One student will demonstrate novice level proficiency with:

5. Expressing feeling and emotions about people and events

12. Formulating hypotheses (using if-then clauses)

15. Describing what needs to be done around the home

18. Asking for, giving, and understanding directions
19. Suggesting alternatives
20. Narrating a sequence of events

WRITING ACTIVITIES

1. Major historical report/presentation (in Spanish)
2. Individual presentations about various hispanic countries (in Spanish)
3. Write a children's story.
4. Write a poem

MULTICULTURE ACTIVITIES

The student will make a study of:
1. Inca
2. Guaraní
3. Slavery in Central and South America
4. Historical persepective of Spain since the civil war through literature
