H.S. Music Enrichment

DESCRIPTION
High School Music Enrichment is designed for those students who want to learn about the theoretical, historical, and sociological aspects of music. This year long class will be offered only for 10-12 grade students and will include class lectures, researching, composing, and performing aspects.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. Students will correctly write and analyze proper music notation.
2. Students will identify and construct major and minor scales in the 12 major/minor key areas.
3. Students will identify aural and written intervals and triads.
4. Students will perform and compose various rhythmic patterns in symmetrical and asymmetrical meters.
5. Students will complete music writing assignments using their knowledge of the FINALE and SIBELIUS computer music program.
6. Students will compose and analyze short part writing assignments.
7. Students will compose and arrange small excerpts of music involving their basic knowledge of music construction.
8. Students will differentiate the styles and development of music in the six music historical periods.
9. Students will categorize composers into the six music historical periods.
10. Students will define the historical and political ramifications on American pop music in the 20th century.

WRITING
1. Students will write essays to compare and contrast music of different Western Music composers.
2. Students will create a written journal expressing their thoughts about a given musical performance or recording.
3. Students will research and write a three to four page paper on a famous 20th century American Composer.

MULTICULTURAL ACTIVITIES
1. Students will listen and identify musical styles of African – American composers/artists.
2. Students will write a paper discussing the role of music in our society and in other cultures.
3. Students will identify and describe various musical instruments of other cultures.
