H.S. Band

DESCRIPTION
This is an elective program for students in grades 9-12. This class will meet daily throughout the school year and will involve some time before school during the marching season, August through October. The band will perform at home football games and 3 to 4 marching contests or trips during this time. November through May, the band is involved in 3 concert programs to include concert band, ensemble groups, and solos. They also participate in various contests and clinics, statewide and locally, throughout the year. Group or private instruction is highly encouraged and actively pursued as scheduling and available time permits. Students will be provided an opportunity to experience various styles of music including marches, classics, and contemporary music.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. Students will demonstrate proper musical skills and the ability to memorize music for marching band.
2. Students will demonstrate proper posture, horn carriage, and marching fundamentals needed for effective marching performance.
3. Students will perform the 12 major and minor scales up and down, tongued, and for memory.
4. Students will perform the chromatic scale the full range of their instrument up and down, slurred, and for memory.
5. Students will demonstrate their technical skills through individual playing tests. Each student will perform a short excerpt that will assess the following musical skills:
A. Intonation
B. Phrasing
C. Dynamics
D. Articulation
E. Style
F. Balance
G. Rhythmic Accuracy
H. Alternate Fingerings
I. Sight-reading
6. Students will demonstrate the art of creating music composition, arranging, and improvisation on their respective instrument.
7. Students will outline the relationships between music, the other arts and disciplines outside of the arts.

WRITING ACTIVITIES
1. The students will write a short essay about their observations and comments based on their performance critique of the band or solo/small ensemble.
2. The students will write self-evaluations about group performances.
3. The students will write evaluations of other groups viewed at festival performances.

MULTICULTURAL ACTIVITIES
1. Students will perform various pieces reflecting different national customs and folk songs from around the world.
2. Students will listen and distinguish music from other cultures.
