Description of Course:
A one-year course for teens focusing on various aspects of teenage life.
Included in the course are teenage relationships such as friends and family
relations, food and nutrition, home decorating, and fashion and clothing
construction. Students spend a large part of the year polishing self-talk, self
esteem and self worth. A self-study is conducted by all students, allowing them
to explore one another’s strengths, allowing them to focus on those strengths
while managing their weaknesses. A lab fee of $10 is required for this 2
semester class. Students spend the majority of each quarter working on
individual projects as well as group projects, dealing with a subject of their
choosing.
Categorical Objectives:
1. Students will describe friendship and qualities to look for in a friend.
2. Students will describe how the management process relates to purchases for
teenage interest and needs.
3. Students will explain buying habits and impulse buying versus planned buying.
4. Students will describe how relationships involve communication via the use of
resources including money, time, and energy.
5. Students will analyze labels of foods and fast food restaurant foods for
nutrients as they relate to a balanced diet.
6. Students will explain how to shop for and prepare foods for family meals and
special occasions.
7. Students will describe a versatile, well constructed wardrobe to meet the
needs of an individual.
8. Students will identify the procedure for selecting clothing or fabrics based
on their content and care qualities.
9. Students will arrange storage and furniture in a room to meet the needs of
the individual.
10. Students will organize a study area and study materials for efficiency and
ease of use.
11. Students will explain wise consumer practices in the purchase and use of
personal appliances, grooming products, etc.
Writing Activities:
1. Students will write papers about various topics throughout the course.
2. Students will define terms and write out answers to questions and case
studies in the chapters.
Multicultural Education Activities:
1. Students will read about and discuss racial discrimination in relationships
with others.
2. Students will listen and respond to people who speak about living in and
working in a world of various cultures.
