Description of Course:
This course focuses upon “parenting” and ways to raise children. The development
of a child from conception through pre-school years is studied. Birth defect
prevention, infant care, health concerns, and the social, emotional, physical,
and intellectual growth of a child are studied.
Categorical Objectives:
1. Students will describe several styles and theories of being a successful
parent.
2. Students will indicate qualities of individuals who work well with children.
3. Students will describe prenatal development, labor and delivery including
preventatives of birth defects.
4. Students will explain newborn care and developmental stages of infancy and
early childhood.
Writing Activities:
1. Students will write papers about various topics throughout the course.
2. Students will define terms and write out answers to questions and case
studies in the chapters.
Multicultural Education Activities:
1. Students will read about and discuss historical perspectives on raising
children as they relate to cultural backgrounds.
2. Students will listen and respond to people who raise children with various
methods and values as determined by their various cultural influences.
