DESCRIPTION
English 9 is required for all ninth grade students and is part of the ninth
grade core curriculum. A strong emphasis is placed on critical thinking, and
students will be required to think critically in each of the core components of
the course: reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary. The reading portion will
involve learning strategies for improving reading of both fiction and
informational text, as well as familiarizing students with multicultural,
contemporary, and classical literature; recreational reading; and library usage.
The writing portion will focus on the writing process by engaging students in
the phases of the writing and experimenting with the various modes of writing.
Grammar will build upon prior knowledge of the parts of speech and how to use
the rules of grammar in their own writing. Vocabulary will incorporate knowing
and using literary terms throughout the year to insure storage in long-term
memory, as well as how to use prefix, suffix, and root words to find the meaning
of words.
COURSE OBJECTIVES

4. Students will analyze literature to identify the stated or implied theme.

5. Students will demonstrate the ability to analyze fiction through identifying
and applying knowledge of elements and literary techniques. (12.1.5)
6. Students will identify and apply knowledge of the text structure and
organizational elements to analyze non-fiction or informational text.(12.1.6)
7. Students will demonstrate the ability to analyze literary works, non-fiction,
films, and media. (12.1.8)
8. Students will write using Standard English for sentence structure, usage,
punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. (12.2.1)
9. Students will write compositions with focus, related ideas, and supporting
details. (12.2.2)
10. Students will use multiple forms to write for different audiences and
purposes. (12.2.4)
11. Students will demonstrate the ability to use self-generated questions,
note-taking, summarizing, and outlining while learning. (12.2.5)
12. Students will participate in student directed discussions by eliciting
questions and responses. (12.3.1)
13. Students will make oral presentations that demonstrate consideration of

WRITING ACTIVITIES
1. Students will practice note-taking.
2. Students will write critical analysis essays based upon novels and literature
anthology selections.
3. Students will write fictional prose, non-fictional prose, and poetry.
4. Students will learn and use the six-trait method of analytical writing.
MULTICULTURAL ACTIVITIES
1. Students will read, study, and discuss fictional prose, non-fictional prose,
poetry, and plays involving diverse cultures.
