Reading Strategies

TEXTBOOK

Students will use textbooks and reading material from their other classes as well as varied reading
material provided by the teacher.

DESCRIPTION

Reading strategies is a semester class offered to ninth grade students who are below grade level in
their reading skills.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. Students will identify the main idea and supporting details in what they have read..(12.1.1)
2. Students will identify and use characteristics to classify different types of texts. (12.1.3)
3. Students will learn strategies to improve reading comprehension.
4. Students will learn to read and understand different types of texts, including fictional prose, non-fictional prose, technical writing, charts, graphs, maps, illustrations, etc.
5. Students will improve their vocabulary through wide reading and a weekly self-selected vocabulary study.
6. Students will study and gain greater understanding of textbook arrangement to aid in better study skills.
7. Students will increase their reading fluency.


WRITING ACTIVITIES

1. Students will practice note making.
2. Students will write a weekly reading journal.
3. Students will create their own charts, graphs, maps, visual organizers, outlines, etc- to
aid in comprehension and memory of the texts being read.
4. Students will learn and use the six-trait method of analytical writing.

MULTICULTURAL ACTIVITIES

1. Students will read, study, and discuss fictional prose, non-fictional prose, and
technical writing involving diverse cultures.
