DESCRIPTION
Practical Communications emphasizes the development of skills in grammar usage,
writing strategies, reading strategies, recreational reading, and library use.
Some individualized instruction is provided throughout the course, while the
students continue to develop independence. The six-trait writing model is
explored, including the areas of: ideas/content, organization, voice, word
choice, sentence fluency, and conventions; grammar application in paragraph and
essay writing is practiced in correlation with the literature units. They learn
to write various types of business letters and a resume.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. The students will read and analyze a variety of literature. (12.1.7)
2. The students will relate American history’s influence to the literature of
the time. (12.1.1, 12.1.3, 12.1.4)
3. The students will write and speak using correct English grammar. (12.2.1)
4. The students will improve reading comprehension. (12.1.8)
5. The students will develop technical writing skills of business writing.
(12.2.4).
6. The students will use the six-trait method of analytical writing. (12.2.1)
7. The students will formulate self-generated questions.

WRITING ACTIVITIES
1. The students will explore narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive
modes of writing.
2. The students will practice note-taking/outlining.
3. The students will write business letters and resumes.
4. The students will practice a variety of creative writing.
MULTICULTURAL ACTIVITIES
1. The students will be exposed to a variety of perspectives through various
activities.
2. Authors of various backgrounds and experiences are studied throughout the
year.
