TITLE

Economic Perspectives

TEXTBOOK

JA Economics; Junior Achievement Incorporated; Second Edition, July 2000.

DESCRIPTION

An optional class for sophomores, juniors, and seniors, this class is taught as a one-semester course. The economics course covers economic theory including macroeconomics and microeconomics as well as entrepreneurship, business management, and the consumer perspective of the economy.

Economics can help answer questions like: Why does the price of gasoline rise or fall? Is recycling always worthwhile? Does a higher minimum wage help workers? Are imports or exports the benefits of trade? Why should I save money? Where should I put it? What is the secret of compound interest? Who is an entrepreneur? Where do people find the money to start their own businesses?


COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. Students will demonstrate knowledge of economic theory.
2. Students will own and operate their own company.
3. Students will understand why economics is important.
4. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the current international economic environment.
5. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the different forms of business organization (sole proprietorship, partnership, and corporation).
6 Students will demonstrate economic decision making as business owners, political leaders, and consumers.
7. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the role of government in the U.S. economy.

WRITING ACTIVITIES

1. Students will write an essay on what they learned playing the stock market game through the Nebraska Council on Economic Education.
2. Students will take essay tests graded with economic rubrics.

MULTICULTURE ACTIVITIES

1. Through the use of the text book and study guides and the Classroom Edition of the Wall Street Journal students will become acquainted with the global economy and its many cultural issues.
2. Through research of government-issued statistics students will comprehend the concept distribution of wealth and how minorities are represented in those statistics.
