Beginning Computer Applications

DESCRIPTION

Learning proper technique for using the standard alphabetic and numeric keyboard is essential before today’s electronic equipment can be utilized effectively and efficiently. This course will introduce the proper technique for keying letters and will develop skills in speed and accuracy. After the keyboard is introduced/reviewed, the class will use this skill to key various personal and business documents and practice proofreading skill. This class is an optional one semester class for all high school students.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. Students will master the alphabetic and numeric keyboard and the numeric keypad with speed and accuracy.
2. Students will use the basic functions of the available software.
3. Students will increase their skill level in both speed and accuracy from straight copy material.
4. Students will learn the proper format of letters, reports, and tables.
5. Students will be able to behave properly while using keyboarding equipment.
6. Students will be able to follow school rules related to use of equipment and use of Internet.
7. Students will be able to key a minimum of 30 wam with 5 or fewer errors on 3-minute timed writings from straight copy materials.

WRITING ACTIVITIES

1. As the entire class relates to information that is communicated within a business or personal office, the writing activities include learning the appropriate format for business communications of many kinds.
2. Integrated throughout the course is the skill of editing and proofreading.
3. A few of the practices and graded work include word/sentence/paragraph composition-at-the-keyboard skills. Since any composition is practice in written expression, these activities should help the students in other subject areas become better writers.

MULTICULTURE ACTIVITIES

1. The Internet, through its basic structure, is a multicultural medium and introduces the students to an extremely large variety of backgrounds, opinions, and resources.
2. A couple of the reports and timings that the students must type for this class include articles related to multicultural issues.
