Kindergarten Social Studies

DESCRIPTION
Our Social Studies curriculum helps the children learn to get along with each
other in a school situation. Opportunities are provided for them to plan, work,
and play together. Through these experiences, children learn to cooperate with
others, to share materials, and to respect the rights, feelings, and opinions of
others.

OBJECTIVES
1. The student will use calendars to show sequence and change throughout the
year. (1.1)
2. The student will describe, identify, and celebrate the people and events
honored in American holidays. Ex. Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Martin
Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks. (1.1)
3. The student will describe special celebrations, food, and clothing of various
cultures. (1.1)
4. The student will use objects to show position/location. (Above, below,
beside, etc.) (1.3)
5. The student will identify community/safety symbols. (1.3)
6. The student will locate the difference between land and water on maps,
globes, or other models. (1.3)
7. The student will identify the physical shape of Nebraska and the United
States on a map. (1.3)
8. The student will identify the basic needs of people. (Shelter, food,
clothing, transportation). (1.4)
9. The student will match simple descriptions of work that people do with the
names of those jobs. (1.7)
10. The student will practice good citizenship by showing respect for self,
family, and others by taking care of his/her own things and respecting what
belongs to others. (1.8)
11. The student will identify patriotic symbols and practice patriotic
activities. Ex.: flag, eagle, The Pledge of Allegiance, singing patriotic songs,
voting. (1.9)
WRITING ACTIVITIES
1. The children draw and write about themselves and their families.
MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION ACTIVITIES
1. We incorporate a variety of multi-cultural literature.
2. Students do a variety of lessons and activities of various countries through
the World Language class.
