Third Grade Social Studies

DESCRIPTION
• Each class reads and discusses a weekly (Scholastic News), and monthly (KIND News) newspaper.
• Each class makes Social Studies connections through our reading unit.
• Each class has a community volunteer present a Junior Achievement sponsored unit. The unit is titled “City” and it deals with business, economics, and related skills and topics.
• All third graders learn about topics such as the environment (resources, pollution, conservation, and endangered animals), prejudice, and segregation through videos and discussion.
• All third graders learn about the culture and history of China and Ancient Egypt.

OBJECTIVES

1. The learner will be able to define vocabulary terms concerning the environment.
2. The learner will be able to identify basic resources and describe ways to conserve
them.
3. The learner will be able to list 4 types of pollution and the causes of each.
4. The learner will be able to identify reasons for endangered animals.
5. The learner will be able to define vocabulary terms concerning prejudice and segregation.
6. The learner will be able to identify cardinal and intermediate directions on any map.
7. The learner will be able to use a world map to locate and identify the four major oceans and seven continents.
8. The learner will be able to identify a variety of geographical features involving land and water.
9. The learner will be able to identify similarities and differences between their culture and the cultures of China and Ancient Egypt.
10. The learner will be able to identify and describe different zones in a city.
11. The learner will be able to define producer and consumer.
