DESCRIPTION

The first grade school year begins with learning social skills. They learn what types of behavior are appropriate for the classroom, lunch room, playground and bus. We create classroom rules together while discussing rewards and consequences. Character building is another concept the children learn while in first grade. They become familiar with the qualities a person of good character possesses.
As the year progresses, we focus on the family unit and friendships. Mapping concepts are introduced while learning the names of their town/city, state and country. We discuss patriotism while learning the words to many patriotic songs and their meanings. We are involved in the Veteran’s Day assembly each year. The children perform The Pledge of Allegiance and The Star Spangled Banner in sign language for the Veterans.
We conclude the year with introducing the meaning of a community. We identify occupations and the importance of community helpers. The children are then invited to interview a parent about their job and report back to the other students. This has become a favorite first grade project spearheaded by Mrs. Gushard.
