Elementary Physical Education - Kindergarten

DESCRIPTION

 

            The kindergarten year is a time of transition from home to school routine.  Most activities              

            are individual in nature, centering on movement experiences.  Other parts of the program are

            rhythmics, simple stunts, and simple games.  There is emphasis on cooperation with others, and

            developing speaking and listening skills.  The child has the opportunity to explore, try out, and

            create in the activity experiences.  The child will have a basic foundation of body management, and

            basic skills with attention to eye-hand coordination, directionaltiy, balance, and coordination.

            Fitness needs are taken care of within the movement and activity experience.  Students meet 2 or 3

            times per week for 20 minutes each session.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

1.          Students will participate in various games.

2.          Students will learn and practice basic movements.

3.          Students will learn rhythm with skills.

4.          Students will work on balance and movement patterns.

5.          Students will work with many different objects (bean bags, hula hoops, tennis balls, etc.)

6.          Students will work on differentiating between:

             a.   Left and right.

             b.   Big and little.

             c.   Slow and fast.

7.          Students will be involved in group activities focusing on unilateral, bilateral and cross-lateral  

             movements.

 

WRITING ACTIVITIES

 

             Students will trace various shapes and letters as part of fine motor activities.

 

MULTICULTURAL ACTIVITIES

 

1.          Students will have access to physical education activities regardless of ethnic background.

2.          Students will have non-sexist, unbiased, non-derogatory language in the physical education  

             classroom.             

3.          Students will have exposure to hallway poster displays of athletes from various cultures to serve as        

             role models.
