Grade 4 - Physical Education

DESCRIPTION

 

      The fourth grade program sets the basis for the fifth grade program as well.  Emphasis is on          progression with specialized skills being taught in all areas, particularly the selected sports.  A       gradual involvement in the sports is possible as the student learns needed skills, participates in          lead-up games, and takes part in the sport itself modified for elementary grades.  Also, time is          allotted for skills testing in the fourth grade program.  The class meets twice per week for thirty            minutes.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

1.           Students will participate in aerobic running clubs.

2.           Students will participate in a volleyball unit which includes drills, skills, games and    

              sportsmanship.

3.           Students will participate in a basketball unit, with emphasis on shooting, ball handling and games.

4.           Students will be involved in a track and fitness unit.

5.           Students will participate in exercise circuits.

6.           Students will learn advanced flexibility routines.

7.           Students will learn relaxation techniques.

8.           Students will participate in a jump rope unit.

9.           Students will participate in a rope climbing unit.

10.         Students  will participate in more advanced balance stunts and activities.

11.         Students will participate in vigorous games and activities to develop upper and lower body      

              strength.

12.         Students will participate in activities which stress cooperation, teamwork and sportsmanship.

13.         Students will begin to understand the connection between exercise and good health.

 

WRITING ACTIVITIES

 

1.           Students will do various writings on topics related to nutrition.

2.           Students will do various writings on topics related to fitness.

3.           Students will do various writings on topics related to self-esteem.

 

 MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION ACTIVITIES

 

1.          Students will observe hallway poster displays of athletes from various cultures to serve as role

             models.

2.          Students will experience nonsexist, unbiased, non-derogatory language in the physical education

             classroom.

3.          Students will learn the cultural origins of games and activities.
