Physical Education - Grade 1

DESCRIPTION

 

      The largest portion of the 1st grade program is devoted to movement experiences which includes          attention to physical development through selected movement.  There is emphasis on basic skills             and efficient management of the body stimulated through challenges to elicit a wide variety of          movement.  Locomotor skills are of prime importance with some application to nonlocomotor

      movement.  Manipulative skills are stressed with a foundation being laid for the important play

      skills of throwing and catching.  Good body mechanics and posture are stressed as well as specific

      movements to develop the arms, shoulder, and abdominal region.  The class meets twice per week

      for 30 minutes. 

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

1.           Students will participate in various movement experiences and body mechanics.

2.           Students will participate in basic movement activities (locomotor and nonlocomotor.)

3.           Students will experience manipulative activities.

4.           Students will work with jump ropes.

5.           Students will be introduced  to the parachute.

6.           Students will continue to work on balance skills.

7.           Students are introduced to simple relays.

8.           Students participate in many simple games that develop upper and lower body strength.

9.           Students are introduced to basic relaxation and breathing techniques.

10.         Posture is stressed and developed.

 

WRITING ACTIVITIES

 

             Students will trace various shapes and letters as part of fine motor activities.

 

MULTICULTURAL ACTIVITIES

 

1.         Students will have access to physical education activities regardless of race.

2.         Students will have non-sexist, unbiased, non-derogatory language in the physical education

            classroom.

3.         Students will have exposure to hallway poster displays of athletes from various cultures to serve

            as role models.
