DESCRIPTION

Mathematics 2 is taught 50 minutes a day, 5 days a week using the McGraw Hill Mathematics
Program as a guide. There is an additional 30-minute block three days a week for Arithmetic
Developed Daily and “Fast Facts: maintenance. Arithmetic Developed Daily is a maintenance
program that contains mixed skills and a wide variety of computational and problem-solving
challenges. The “Fast Facts” is a time to practice addition and subtraction strategies while
improving the students’ speed and accuracy with math facts. Mathematics in second grade
concentrates primarily on the following math concepts: math facts in addition and subtraction up
to 18, place value, adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers with and without regrouping, telling
time, and money skills.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. The learner will be able to translate patterns from one form to another and to extend them (4,6,2)

2. The learner will be able to read and write numbers to 999 and identify the value of any digit in that
numeral. (4.1.1)

3. The learner will be able to read and write 2 and 3 digit numbers in expanded form.

4. The learner will be able to recall addition and subtraction facts to 12 and be able to use strategies
to solve them to 20 (4.2.1)

5. The learner will be able to add and subtract two digit numbers with and without regrouping.
(4.2.1)

6. The learner will be able to identify congruent and symmetrical geometric shapes. (4.4.3)

7. The learner will be able to identify the perimeter and area of a shape. (4.3.4)

8. The learner will be able to apply the following standard and metric measurements when working with length and volume: ˝ inch, centimeter, (length) and cups and pints, liter (volume). (4.3.4)

9. The learner will be able to read and write the time to hour, ˝ hour, and 5 - minute intervals. (4.3.3)

10. The learner will be able to count and write the value of a collection of pennies, nickels, dimes,
and quarters. (4.1.5)

11. The learner will be able to read, write and illustrate ˝ of a whole or a set. (4.1.2)

12. The learner will be able to select and use computational techniques appropriate to specific
problems and determine whether the results are reasonable. (4.6.2)

13. The learner will be able to discuss, read and write about mathematical concepts covered.

WRITING ACTIVITES

1. Students will write their own story problems.
2. Students will write their method of solving a variety of math problems.
3. Students will write their solutions to daily word problems in a sentence.

MULTICULTURAL ACTIVITIES

1. Students count up to 10 in Spanish.
2. Students will read names from different cultures in word problems.
