Children’s Literature Books (fiction and nonfiction)

 

DESCRIPTION

 

Third, fourth and fifth grade students spend approximately 60 minutes each day, or 300 minutes per week on reading instruction and practice. The addition of other language arts lessons such as writing and spelling skills increases this time.  The fourth grade program builds on the skills taught in the previous grades.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES 

 

 1.                The student will correctly draw conclusions after reading a story. (4.1.3) (4.1.6)

 2.                The student will use a dictionary to define vocabulary words. (4.1.1) (4.1.2.) (4.1.4)

3.            The student will use the alphabetical arrangement of a dictionary to help find words for oral and written expression. (4.1.4)

4.               The student will organize information by summarizing. (4.1.3) (4.2.5) (4.3.1)

 5.                The student will locate and interpret information in an encyclopedia, using key

                words, volume numbers, guide words, entry words, and entries. (4.1.4)

 6.                The student will recognize and explain cause/effect relationships. (4.1.3)

 7.                The student will identify root words and correctly use prefixes and suffixes. (4.1.1)

 8.                The student will correctly use a table of contents and index to locate information. (4.1.4)

 9.                The student will recognize problems and solutions within a story. (4.1.3)

10.                The student will recognize analogous relationships (things similar in some way). (4.1.3)

11.                The student will recognize main ideas and supporting details. (4.1.3)

12.                The student will use context to interpret idioms, similes, metaphors, and personification.                 (4.1.1)

13.                The student will use context to determine the meaning of an unfamiliar word. (4.1.1)                 (4.1.2).

14.                The student will locate and use standard book features such as headnotes,                           footnotes, and diagrams. (4.1.4)

15.                The student will use classification to organize information. (4.1.4)

16.                The student will identify types of fiction. (Realistic, fantasy, mystery, etc.) (4.1.5)

17.                The student will identify the critical attributes of a tall tale, and will write and illustrate an original tall tale. (4.1.6)

WRITING ACTIVITIES

 

Refer to Language Arts Communication-Grade 4 Course Objectives.  The communication objectives are integrated throughout the grade four curriculum.

 

MULTICULTURAL ACTIVITIES

 

Multicultural themes are integrated throughout the entire fourth grade curriculum, including literature, art, music, math and social studies.
