                Children’s Literature Books (fiction and nonfiction)

 

DESCRIPTION

 

Third, fourth, and fifth grade students spend approximately 60 minutes each day or 300 minutes  per week on reading instruction and practice.   The addition of other language arts lessons such as writing and spelling skills increases this time.  The third grade program builds on the skills taught in the previous grades. 

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

1.                   Students will infer word meanings from taught roots, prefixes, and suffixes. (4.1.1)

2.                   Students will alphabetize words to the third letter. (4.1.2)

3.                   Students will use guide words to find new words and their meanings in a dictionary. (4.1.2)

4.                   Students will answer literal, interpretive, and evaluative comprehension questions for third grade reading level. (written or oral). (4.1.3)

5.                   Students will sequence events from a story at third grade level. (4.1.3)

6.                   Students will demonstrate beginning keyboarding skills. (4.1.4)

7.                   Students will use indexes including telephone books and dictionaries. (4.1.4)

8.                   Students will compare the following forms of literature: science fiction, historical fiction, realistic fiction and fantasy. (4.1.5)

9.                   Students will identify similarities in characters and events across stories. (4.1.6)

10.                Students will read, retell, and dramatize fables and identify their attributes. (4.1.6)

11.                Students will recognize cause and effect relationships in grade level stories. (4.1.6)

12.                Students will distinguish between fact and opinion. (4.1.7)

13.                Students will read and compare narratives and stories across geographic regions, cultures, and time periods. (4.1.8)

14.                Students will identify the main idea of a paragraph. (4.1.3)

  WRITING ACTIVITIES

 

                Refer to Language Arts Communication - Grade 3 Course Objectives. The communication objectives are integrated throughout the grade three curriculum.

  MULTICULTURAL ACTIVITIES

 

Multicultural themes are integrated throughout the entire third grade curriculum, including literature, art, music, math, and social studies. 

 

Elaine and the Flying Frog provides a look at an Asia American family.  Students research facts about Asian cultures.
