Children’s Literature Books (fiction and nonfiction)

 

DESCRIPTION

 

In the primary grades (K, 1, and 2) students spend approximately 90 minutes each day on reading instruction.  The addition of other language arts lessons such as writing, spelling and computer instruction  increases this time.  The first grade program reinforces skills taught in Kindergarten. First Grade also builds upon common word families/patterns  and introduces specific reading strategies, new phonograms/word recognition, comprehension, listening, speaking  and writing skills. The processes of reading and writing are integrated through reading/writing instruction.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

1.                   Students will write a story and be able to read it. (1.1.1)               

2.                   Students will read and write common high frequency words. (1.1.1)

3.                   Students will use phonetic knowledge to read. (1.1.

4.                   Students will say the sound and state the name of all 70 phonograms. (1.1.2)

5.                   Students will blend sounds (phonograms) and letters to figure out words they do not know. (1.1.2)

6.                   Students will build common word families/ patterns. (1.1.2)

7.                   Students will follow words left to right, top to bottom, front of book to back. (1.1.3)

8.                   Students will state/identify author and illustrator. (1.1.3)

9.                   Students will identify periods, question marks and exclamation marks. (1.1.3)

10.                Students will define or show that they understand the meaning of individual  grade appropriate words. (1.1.4)

11.                Students will answer literal, interpretive and evaluative comprehensive questions (written or oral) expected at grade level. (1.1.4)

12.                Students will use appropriate voice level, phrasing, sentence structure and intonation when reading aloud. (1.1.4)

13.                Students will sequence sentences in correct order. (1.1.4)

14.                Students will identify important story elements (main character, setting and events). (1.1.4)

15.                Students will read different types of books. (1.1.4)

16.                Students will distinguish between truth (fact) and make-believe in literature. (1.1.4)

17.                Students will retell, when asked, literary selections they have heard. (1.1.5)

18.                Students will identify ways in which literary selections relate to their own lives. (1.1.5)

19.                Students will identify and spell familiar words correctly. (1.1.6)

20.                Students will write own ideas and life experiences. (1.1.7)

21.                Students will create a sentence that can be written and then read by the student. (1.1.7)

22.                Students will edit own writing, when accuracy and neatness is expected for finished composition. (1.1.7)

23.                Students will participate in various class and group discussions, including “brainstorming” and sequencing activities. (1.2.1)

24.                Students will describe items using complete sentences. (1.2.1)

WRITING  ACTIVITIES

 

1.                   Students will practice handwriting skills in Zaner-Bloser Handwriting  workbooks.

2.                   Students will write teacher dictated sentences.

3.                   Students will edit sentences.

4.                   Students will write on a regular basis in  Journals.

5.                   Students will write in Modern Curriculum Press Phonics book.

6.                   Students will write and use weekly Spelling words on weekly assessments and in personal writing.

 

MULTICULTURE  ACTIVITIES

 

1.             Multicultural themes and relationships are emphasized and integrated throughout the entire first grade curriculum including literature, art, Math and social skills.
