DESCRIPTION

 

Language Arts communication skills are integrated and are required of all fourth grade students throughout the day.  Students spend focused time daily on writing activities which include handwriting, spelling, editing, journaling and responding to literature in both oral and written form.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

1.        Students will demonstrate the ability to speak orally by presenting information in an organized manner. (4.2.3, 4.3.2)

2.    Students will express inferences in content areas. (4.3.1)

3.    Students will listen and respond to oral information in all content areas. (4.3.1)

4.        Students will demonstrate the ability to express themselves in written forms which include

reports, stories, journals, and poetry. (4.2.4)

 5.    Students will write legibly using both cursive and manuscript styles.

 6.    Students will write sentences in which they will identify and correctly use subjects

        and predicates. (4.2.1)

 7.    Students will identify nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and verbs of being. (4.2.1)

8.        Students will identify the structure of a paragraph, including the main idea or topic sentence (4.2.3).

9.        Students will demonstrate the use of singular possessives. (4.2.1)

10.      Students will outline a paragraph using one topic and two subtopics. (4.2.5)

11.      Students will identify and use synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms. (4.2.1)

MULTICULTURAL  ACTIVITIES

 

1.        A special bulletin board will highlight some of the contributions and unique features

       of literature and people of different cultures.

2.        Students will participate in oral discussions and respond to questions related to multicultural

multimedia and literature.

3.        Students will respond in journal writing to class discussions concerning important Black Americans.

4.        Students research and report on Native American Leaders as a part of their study of Nebraska studies.
