 First Grade Art

DESCRIPTION

In first grade, students have art for half an hour twice a week for a total of 60 minutes.  Importance is placed on fostering student confidence by involving them in art activities, especially those related to their own experiences.  Emphasis is placed on developing student’s observation skills, exploring and becoming aware of their imagination, and increasing eye and hand coordination by using art media and tools.  Students will be introduced to basic design elements such as line, shape, color, texture, and pattern.  The students begin to view art, discuss art, share art and create art.   Students will participate in several multicultural and art history activities.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1.                  The learner will perceive and describe lines, color, shapes, patterns, textures, and sensory qualities of objects.

 

                2.                The learner will learn that looking at art is enjoyable and integral part of                         learning about art.

 

            3.            The learner will describe the subject matter, mood or details of a particular               art form.

 

4.                  The learner will observe artwork from many cultures and eras talking about it, with encouragement to go beyond whether they like or dislike the work.

 

5.                  The learner will become aware of places to see art in their community, various artists, and the kinds of art they create.

 

6.         The learner will learn the use of overlapping and the relationship of proportion when overlapping.          

 

            7.            The learner will identify and reproduce the basic colors of warm, cool and                                      neutral.

 

8.                  The learner will create patterns using lines, shapes and colors.

 

 

9.             The learner will use the primary colors to create secondary colors.

 

WRITING ACTIVITIES

1.                  Students will identify specified projects by titling their work.

 

2.                  Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of a primary and secondary color wheel by creating one on paper.

 

 

MULTICULTURE ACTIVITIES

1.            Students will view and discuss artwork from different cultures including:

Native American, African American, Hispanic, and Asian cultures.

 

2.           Students will create artwork of their own utilizing information and ideas

           from other cultures.
