CLASSROOM RULES AND EXPECTATIONS

The main purpose of these specifically stated expectations is quite simple:  If each of us shows consideration and respect for one another, then the teacher can teach and the student can learn.  Anything that gets in the way of that process is “against the rules,” whether stated or not.  Keeping that in mind, read this and then sign the signature sheet.  Keep this copy in your notebook for future reference.

  1. Obey all school rules as listed in the handbook.
  2. Afford all persons in the class reasonable courtesy such as you would expect for yourself.  Courtesy includes, but is not limited to, the following:
    1. Be quiet and listen when others are talking.  If you must interrupt, say, “excuse me.”  If the class must wait on you to get back on task before we can proceed, you will spend one detention (15-minutes) for every minute, or part thereof, that the class waited for you.
    2. Audible yawns are distracting editorials and are grounds for detention time.
    3. If you chew gum, do not share it with others.  If I hear it or see it, it must go in the trash, and I may give you a detention as well if it becomes a habit.
  3. Be on time.  Timeliness means being in your seat, quiet, with your notebook open, and homework turned in when the bell rings.  Except for emergencies, I will give passes for restrooms, water, and lockers only to those who arrive in the classroom and ask for permission before class starts.
  4. Homework is due at the beginning of class.  Deposit it in the in-basket before the class begins or it will be late.  Do not wait for me to call for it.
  5. I will accept late work up to the date of the test for the unit, but it receives only 50% of its value at once it is late.
  6. If you are tardy without a pass, you must make up the time after school at the rate of 5 minutes detention for each minute (or part thereof) that you are tardy.
  7. Come to class prepared with text(s), paper, notebook, and a blue or black pen.  If you need to return to your locker or borrow class materials after the start of class, you are tardy (minimum 3 minutes late).  Pens/pencils that quit during class are an exception.
  8. You must do any graded work on smooth edged, full sheets (8 ½ x 11 or 8 x 10).  Scraps and rough edged sheets are not acceptable.  I will throw them away.
  9. If you miss work or do not hand in an assignment because of an excused absence, the work is due—or you must make arrangement to complete it—on the first day you return to class.  Work missed during an unexcused absence will receive no credit.
  10. Keep a notebook (preferably in a 3-ring binder) used exclusively for this class.  Bring this notebook to class every day.
  11. Leave your desk clean and in order at the end of the class period.  Classes in the last period of the day will place the chairs on the tables.
  12. The grading scale for this class is the one listed in the handbook for the school.  Semester grades are the average of all work done in both quarters.
