Norris C.A.R.E.S. (Community Awareness Resulting in Education & Strategies) is a Norris community group that was formed in the summer of 2006 for the purpose of promoting healthy community and family lifestyles by supporting one another and raising awareness regarding risky behaviors. This group has been meeting on a monthly basis at the Hickman Community Building. Our goal for the community is to be united in purpose, have an open line of communication and have a way to affect environmental change. Safe Homes, a project of Norris C.A.R.E.S., is a network of parents, guardians, and community members working together to help keep youth safe from alcohol and other drugs. This community group will be assembling a directory of parents within our school that pledge to actively supervise any underage gatherings in their homes and not allow alcohol, tobacco or drugs. True drug prevention is possible only when all segments of society support and enforce clear consistent no-use messages for our children regarding alcohol and drugs. Adults working together to support and encourage one another make the endless job of building a safe community easier. Members of the Norris C.A.R.E.S./Safe Homes group plan to attend events at Norris this year to ask parents to sign a pledge and become part of the network of people working together to affect a positive change in our community. A directory will be printed and available later this year. We will be asking parents to sign a pledge to: A) Actively supervise all gatherings in their homes or on their property. B) Agree to make certain there is no alcohol or drug use by youth in their homes or on their property. C) Parents agree to call ahead to any gathering their children attend to make certain there will be supervision, and that the gathering will be alcohol free and drug free BEFORE saying yes. Pledge forms may be returned to the school office or given to a Norris C.A.R.E.S./Safe Homes volunteer when you see them at an event. Everyone is encouraged to attend the Norris C.A.R.E.S. meetings to be more informed about what’s going on in your community. Norris C.A.R.E.S. meetings are held at the Hickman Community Building at 7:30pm on the first Thursday of each month. We strongly believe that local people solve local problems best! Let’s work together.
