Working with Text / Text Effects

In this lesson you will:

Use and understand how use the Text tool.
Use and understand how to attach text to a path
Use and understand how to expand and ungroup text to make a SHAPE.
Use and understand how to use the FREE TRANSFORM TOOL (E) to distort SHAPE (expanded text).

Tools you will use:

Text Tool (T)
Free Transform Tool (E)
Pen Tool (P)
Selection Tool (V)
Direct Selection Tool (A)

Palettes that  you will use:

Tool Box (Text, Free Transform,  Selection, Pen)
Control Palette
Layers Palette
Swatches Palette
Stroke Palette

 Open a new document.

Text on a Path

  1. Draw a circle with the ellipse tool. 
  2. Select the PATH TEXT tool and click on the PATH of the CIRCLE that you just drew.
    This will attach your text tool to the path
  3. Type some text.
    Your text should follow the path of the original circle (the circle will disappear)

Transforming (Distorting Text-Perspective, shadows, etc.)

  1. Type some text (get it just the way you want it because in the next step you will change it into a shape)
  2. Select the text that you just typed and go to Object > Expand on the main menu. 
  3. Click OK.
    Your text is no longer editable text.  By expanding it, you have made it a SHAPE!
  4. Use the FREE TRANSFORM TOOL and select one of the corners of your new SHAPE (expanded text)
  5. While you have the corner selected, click the any combination of the ctrl, Alt, and Shift keys
    If you can't get your text to distort into perspective...
    be sure you are using the FREE TRANSFORM TOOL
    and
    you have selecting the corner BEFORE you press the ctrl, alt, and shift.
