The graph below illustrates the percent of students, by grade level, who scored above the 50th percentile in Total Score results as well as the reading, language, mathematics, science and social studies sub-tests of the Terra Nova II Achievement Test given to all studen= ts in grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 11 this past spring.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Student Progress in Re= ading

 

A master plan for the systemic teaching of reading K-12 in the Norris Schools was established in = 2004 after two years of study.  New research-based reading curricula and materials were implemented in grades K= -6 for the 2004-05 school year, and changes were made with regards to the teac= hing of reading in grades 7-12 as well.  Students are diagnosed regularly, and instruction designed according= ly centered around the “five big ideas”:

            =     a. Phonemic/phonological awareness;

            =     b. Phonics (alphabetical principles);

            =     c. Fluency;

            =     d. Vocabulary/spelling/language;

            =     e. Text comprehension/knowledge.

The matter of teachi= ng children to read is clearly established as the most important function of e= ach regular classroom teacher in grades K-6. Ann Thober serves as the reading c= oach for the District.  The goal in= the Norris schools is to have 90% or more of all students at or above grade lev= el in reading.  Progress benchmar= ks were set, and during the 33rd week of school, all students in gr= ades 1-11 will take the Gates MacGinitie test of reading.  Data showing the status by grade is shown below.

The chart below provides an overview of Norris student= s compared to state and national averages of students who took the ACT test, a standardized test that predicts college success.  Approximately 75 % of the graduati= ng class of 2005 took the ACT.

The tables below ill= ustrate how 4th, 8th, and 11th, grade students at Norris scored on the Statewide Writing Assessment this past school year.  All public schools in Nebraska are required to take part in = the assessment, which identifies writing proficiency.  The charts below indicate the perc= entage of Norris students proficient as well as the comparison of Norris students = to statewide averages.
