2
What is a monogastric digestive system?
  • Describe digestion process in a monogastric animal.

  • Identify different parts of a monogastric digestive system.

  • Compare and contrast different animals’ digestive systems.

4
Compartments of Mongastric Stomach
  • There’s only one!!!
5
Process
  • Foodàstomachàsmall intestineàlarge intestine
6
Small Intestine
  • Divided into three parts—duodenum, jejunum, and ileum
7
Small Intestine
  • Duodenum—enzymes from the pancreas enter the duodenum and break down fats
  • Duodenum—bile from gall bladder enter the duodenum and break down carbohydrates and proteins
  • Jejunum and ileum—absorb digestive nutrients
  • BACK
8
Large Intestine
  • Absorbs water from undigested material; adds lubricating mucous; shapes material for easier passage

  • Divided into cecum, colon and anus
9
Large Intestine
  • Cecum—here, bacteria break down nutrients, but not as efficiently as a ruminant animal
  • Colon—tubelike structure
  • Anus—you know!
