1
Introduction to Agriscience
  • Meeting Human Needs

2
Why Study Human Needs?

  • Humans survive because of agriculture!

  • Where does milk come from?

  • How do we get energy?
3
Basic Human Needs
  • Food

  • Fiber (Clothing)

  • Shelter (Forestry and Wood Products)

4
Food
  • FoodàSolid and liquid living things eat

  • Nutrientsàsubstances necessary for living things to live and grow

  • WHY DO WE NEED FOOD?
    • Energy
    • Growth and repair
    • Good health
    • Body processes

5
Food
  • Sources of food
    • Plant sourcesàEarth has 250,000 species of plants.  We use only around 600 for human consumption!

    • Animal sourcesàover 2 million species of animals are found on Earth.  We eat only about 50 species, and only 4 are raised in large numbers.  What are these 4?
      • Cattle, hogs, chickens, and sheep
      • What about fish?

6
Fiber
  • Fiberàmaterial used to make clothing and shelter

    • Animalàwool, mohair, fur, and silk

    • Plantàcotton, flax, hemp, jute, and sisal
      • We all know what cotton is, right?
      • Flaxàcomes from the stems of flax plants.  It is used to make linen
      • Hemp, jute, and sisal are all coarse fibers.
7
Fiber
  • Fiberàmaterial used to make clothing and shelter

    • Manufactured and MineralàSynthetic materials.  Polyester and Nylon are great examples.  Asbestos is made from minerals.

8
Shelter
  • What do we need shelter for?

    • Protect us from the elements and from wild animals and insects (like spiders…)!

    • ForestryàScience of producing trees.

    • ProductsàLumber, Plywood, Veneer, Composition board, and Paper
9
History of Agriculture
  • Began with DOMESTICATIONàtaming of wild plant and animals to produce them for a specific purpose.

  • Read, as a class, pages 11-13.
10
DEFINITION OF AGRICULTURE!
  • AGRICULTUREàscience of growing crops and raising livestock.

    • Charles Townshendàcrop rotation system
    • Jethro Tullàplanter
    • Eli Whitneyàcotton gin
    • Cyrus McCormickàreaper (harvesting machine)
    • John Deereàsteel moldboard plow
    • Gregor Mendelàbasic principles of heredity
11
What is Agriscience?
  • Agriscienceàthe application of scientific principles and new technologies to agriculture.
