History of Floral Design
  • Just like any artifacts, floral artifacts give us a taste of the past.


  • Floral remains give proof that people have always placed importance on flowers.

Greek Period
  • Flowers and petals scattered on ground.


  • Used to make wreaths and garlands.


  • Wreaths worn by important people.


  • Cornucopia introduced during this period.

Roman Period
  • Wreaths and garlands popular again!


  • First appearance of a basket of mixed flowers.


  • Introduction of a naturalized floral bouquet.

Byzantine Period
  • Symmetrical tree compositions were introduced.

Renaissance Period
  • Here, flowers were associated with symbols:
    • RoseŕLOVE
    • White Lilyŕchastity and fidelity
      • Became known as the Madonna lily.

  • Very few stems showed.


  • Arts very popular!


  • GRAND!


  • Everyone wanted everything (landlords, etc.).

French Period
  • Continued GRAND use of flowers!


  • Fan-shaped and massed floral arrangements.

English-Georgian Period
  • Fragrance was first prerequisite of a bouquet.


  • It was thought that fragrances ridded
  • the air of contagious and infectious
  • diseases.


  • Nosegays were created.


  • Hand-held bouquets called tussie-mussies.

Victorian Period
  • Introduced posy holders!


  • Also introduced bosom bottles to keep the flowers alive and to keep you smelling great!

Oriental Period
  • Flowers perfect.


  • Humans imperfect.


  • It was a sin if you made arrangements incorrectly.


  • Princes and princesses went to floral design school.


  • Container was manmade, so flowers COULD NOT touch the container.


  • They were thrifty!

Real-American Period
  • Fruit was popular!


  • Brought on the development of the fruit basket.


  • More dried flowers used in everyday jugs as vases.


  • Everything much more simple (immigration….not having much….)
