WHAT IS SCIP?
SCIP refers to the School Community Intervention Program. This four-component program to assist students experiencing difficulty in the learning environment was developed jointly by representatives from both the community and Lincoln Public Schools. It is currently sponsored by various partnering agencies including the Lincoln Medical Education Partnership, the United Way of Lincoln and Lancaster County, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, and Region V Systems.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF SCIP?
The purpose of SCIP is threefold: 1. To identify students exhibiting high risk behaviors which interfere with their ability to learn. These behaviors may or may not be related to the use of alcohol and/ or other drugs. 2. To provide alternative approaches in helping students deal with these problems, and: 3. To provide a support system for student and parents to address problem areas both within and outside the school setting.
HOW DOES SCIP ASSIST STUDENTS?
The program has four components, each of which assists students: 1) IDENTIFICATION of students who exhibit problematic behavior. 2) INTERVENTION with the student, parents, and a school representative from the SCIP Team to describe the problem behavior/s and seek solutions and explore options which will increase the student’s chances of being successful in school. 3) REFERRAL to a community agency tailored to youth and families. 4) STUDENT SUPPORT to assist students in the school environment. The goal of individual and group support is to aid the recovery process of the student.
HOW ARE STUDENTS REFERRED TO SCIP?
Students are referred to SCIP by teachers, students, administrators, friends, parents, or by self-referral. Once a referral is made, teachers are asked to observe the student’s behavior in class and forward information to the SCIP team. The team reviews the information and decides what action should be taken.
WHAT ACTIONS CAN BE TAKEN?
Referral to SCIP does not always indicate a problem with alcohol and/or other drugs. Students who exhibit high risk behaviors can be referred for assistance to a counselor, community agency or a faculty member who can offer assistance.
If behaviors indicate the possibility of involvement with alcohol and/or other drugs, the intervention process is used to encourage students and their parents to obtain an evaluation at a community agency.
