Food Science
This class is taught one semester, every other year.
Food science
is the study of the production, processing, preparation, evaluation, and
utilization of food. It
is based on many other
areas of science such as chemistry, biology, physics, and psychology. Food
science uses scientific methods in laboratory experiments to help understand
food.
The study of food science goes hand in hand with the study of nutrition.
Nutrition is the scientific understanding of how food is used by the body.
Many of the current areas of research in food science grew out of a desire to
provide food that has the highest nutritional value to as many people as
possible.
Topics covered will include:
food production, marketing, processing,
packaging, distribution and safety.
An emphasis will be placed on the
application of scientific principles
in the production of food products.
Each student will be responsible for developing
an original food product and preparing it for the class.
The UN-L Department of Food Science &
Technology will work with students,
exposing them to cutting-edge technology in the world of food science.
Students will also have the opportunity to see
the facilities & have a guided tour through the food science &
technology department.
